The Paladin

Paladins are Channeling semi-spell users who concentrate heaverly in chivalric combat. The paladin is the epitome of Authurian knighthood. Names like Lancelot, Gawain, and Galahad should come to mind. He is a heavy weapons and heavy armor specialist. The Paladin should be played carefully in reguard to moral style (usually strictly good and chivalrous) as any variance from his convictions turns great strength into bloody hypocrisy.

Padraic staggered down the hall. He could feel the blood oozing from his many wounds. By sheer willpower, he made his feet continue to move. It would be easy to stop moving; just sit down and die. But that would be the end. He must get back and warn the others. He must live that long; then he could die….

Prime Stats: Self Discipline and Intuition.

Story

Thoughts of Butterflies.

Rom knew he was facing a battle for his life. What he didn’t know was that he was also facing a battle for his soul.

The dark passage way was dimly lit by the glow of the paladin’s holy sword. Rom moved cautiously forward toward the large vaulted room that held the tomb of Draxis, the Scourge of the Ten Kingdoms.

Something had awoken the evil spirit allowing his influence to spread across the lands once again. Soon his power would be complete if he were allowed to continue. He needed a body to possess to regain his full strength. That is why Rom couldn’t allow the others in his party to accompany him down the passage way.

They would be easy targets for the despotic spirit. He had the protection of his god, Jun. Rom closed his eyes briefly and said a silent prayer for her for strength and protection. He felt her magical power flowing through his body and mind. Rom recited the incantations that would bring these powers to the surface and steeled himself for the contest to follow.

Slowly, he walked into the chamber and immediately felt the lifeless cold begin to drain his resolve. Feeling a shiver crawl down his spine he raised his large two-handed sword and called out, “Be gone foul spirit. You have no place in this world.”

A deep hollow laugh resonated throughout the tomb reverberating in a series of taunting echoes. The voice came from a black shadow rising from the tomb in front of the paladin. “So, she has sent one of her toy soldiers to fight her battle. I am not surprised.”

The comment took Rom off-guard. He gave a quick shake of his head to clear the confusion that was beginning to distract him.

“That is a pity. You are a noble servant and a man of value. One that shouldn’t be wasted so carelessly.”

Rom felt the stirring of fear in his heart. Something wasn’t right. He dug deep into his faith for strength and drew on the power gifted to him by Jun. “By the sacred word of Jun, be gone foul spirit. This world holds no place for you!” Each word spoken was delivered with a puff of breath that was visible in the cold chamber. The words floated slowly toward the spirit of Draxis.

The foul wraith held his hand before him and the fog of words froze and fell to the floor before they reached him. “Spare your spells my good man. They have no effect on me.” As he listened, Rom could feel his blood freezing in a similar manner to his words. He gripped his sword tightly and noticed the blade was gathering a coating of frost that was obscuring the runes inscribed on bright silver metal. Doubt began to cloud his brain. There was a slight hesitation in the spirits voice, “Why don’t you put down your sword and let us talk like true men. I would take you as my brother and not use you without hope.”

Rom replied through chattering teeth, “By the power…. by the pow… power of.” “Silence!” The voice of the shadow filled the room with the roar of a thousand waterfalls. The impact sent Rom reeling back a step and left him feeling drained of all warmth as the echoes cascaded around him.

“She has deceived and forsaken you. She has abandoned you to what? To one she knows is more powerful than her. One that is more deserving of worship than her. Come my son, drop your weapon. Let us be one.”

Rom placed one hand on his head trying to orient himself in the fog of his mind. Yes. Yes, it was simple. Just drop my sword and accept the new master. It would be so easy.

Rom began to place his sword on the obsidian floor. The runes on the mithral irgaak started to glow. Somewhere deep inside him he could hear a voice whispering out of the shadows. It was the voice of his blade, Chalifall. Her voice spoke in thoughts rather than words.

Rom began to see visions of delicate spring flowers pushing skyward. He saw the mountain streams thawing and releasing their lifegiving waters to the green meadows below. He felt warmth beginning to flow through his hand. He felt the love of Jun for all things living.

“Drop the sword and join me. Together we can bring justice to this world.”

Drawing a few ragged breathes into his frozen lungs, Rom gripped the handle of his weapon tighter and lifted it once again.

Rom raised his head and placed his other hand on the hilt. He began to feel the warm summer breezes that rolled over the endless hills of his homeland. He saw the flocks whirling in the blue sky. He embraced the sounds of the meadows awoken in springtime. And he began to get angry. Angry because he knew that the foul creature before him would seek to destroy all of the things he cherished.

“Obey me fool!”

Rom’s wrath ignited a furnace in his heart that spread heat quickly through his entire body. He looked at the shadow and felt rage.

Rushing forward Rom swung his mighty weapon at his foe. It hit the dark spirit with a crack. The paladins’ hands stung as if he had just struck iron. But the blade had made a dent in the hard cold evil before him.

The spirit howled with rage and Draxis shot forth a bolt of pure black ice. The impact hit Rom like a battering ram but did little to quench the fury that had overcome him.

Again, the paladin raised his mighty blade and smashed it with vengeance into the wraith. This time the blade bit deeper and Draxis screamed with pain.

Another bolt of pure frost hit Rom squarely in the chest causing him to quaver for a moment.

“You can not win this battle fool. Drop your blade and recognize your true master.”

Rom recovered and stepped forward once again, “Your spells have no effect on me foul creature.”

For a third time Rom wielded his weapon against his opponent slicing a deep mark in the shadow.

The spirit wavered with the impact and drew itself to the far side of the chamber while unleashing another bolt of dark misery toward Rom.

This time the paladin dodged the attack and stepped forward as he plunged the full length of his great sword into the bowels of Draxis. “In the name of Jun, be gone foul creature. You have no place in this world!”

The air in the chamber shattered around them with an intense flash. The flash was replaced by total darkness. Total silence.

Rom awoke to the sound of Shay, the healer in his party, gently coaxing him into consciousness.

Rom looked up at his gentle face and asked, “Did I win?”

“Yes. Yes you did. Now stay still and let me finish my job.”

Rom smiled and closed his eyes. He drifted back into unconsciousness with thoughts of butterflies.
