The Astrologer

Rylara stood on the battlements of the East Tower, gazing at the star-filled sky, mentally tracing the familiar patterns of the constellations as she waited for the rising of the moons. She reflected on the horoscope that she had earlier cast for the newborn prince and the incomplete and inaccurate interpretation she had given to the Council. Let the Regents believe Prince Joram would be weak-willed and unhealthy, a willing tool for their ends, rather than their nemesis. In the east, rose the blood-red moon.

Writen in the Stars

Rylara had always loved the stars, her mother had told her many times of the days when she was just a baby. Her mother would carry her outside, holding her tenderly in her arms. Rylara had always had trouble sleeping at night, that was until her mother started taking her outside, and Rylara discovered the stars.

She would look up at the open heavens above, eyes wide in awe. Her mother would smile at her, rocking Rylara gently in her arms until she fell asleep.

Rylara’s love for the stars only grew as she became more aware of the world, and she loved staying out late at night, resting in the open fields. She would stay here for hours, lying on her back, memorizing the constellations. She would draw them, learn their names, and not just of the stars, she would make notes of the comets too.

At one point in her life during her teens, she moved with her parents to a town some miles away. It was an industrial place, the air clogged with smoke from the forges.

Rylara quickly became unhappy here, unable to see the stars at night due to the fog that clung to the town, her new home.
Shortly after this she left her parent’s home and moved back to the little village she had been born in.

She lived for many years with her grandmother until the old lady reached the last of her days. After this Rylara decided to travel the world, and saw more in a short space of time than she had in her whole life up to that point. She joined a university for many years, and learned about magic, history, and many other things that had previously been beyond her reach. She travelled far, learned about the world, of families and armies and the landscape. And as much as she found everything around her so interested, her true love remained in the darkness above her, in the cosmos. She would look forward to each and every night, spending hours on her balcony, face turned upwards. This great mystery, this world above her own she could not reach, only observe from a distance, had truly captured her heart and captivated her mind.

Over the years she became a master of her craft, eventually catching the eye of several members of the royal council, who sought her skills and knowledge in horoscopes. They used this for their own means, and Rylara was able to live in luxury and relative safety for many years within the palace, advising them of what they wanted to know. They wanted to keep her close, and though Rylara acted oblivious to their schemes, she knew they were planning something in secret.

But she had her own plans in mind, and those that came to her for help and advice, asking for information from her regarding their horoscopes, were completely in her hands. And so, she told them what she thought they wanted to hear, or made them believe things that would benefit her in the future.

And so, over the years she meticulously laid out a plan, all the while playing the part of a clueless bystander, unaware of all that was happening behind closed doors. But she had a reach far greater than most realised, and so they would drop their guard around her.
